I am a native of Humboldt County and I chose to pursue my education at HSU where I earned my MA in Psychology. I began my professional career as an Associate Professor of Psychology at College of the Redwoods. Shortly after starting as a professor I opened a dance studio in Arcata, the No Limits Dance Academy. I had the privilege of pursuing both of my passions while also being a wife and mother. As our household increased in size I made the decision to give up my part-time position at CR and focus my attention on my growing family and dance studio.
Now that my children are grown I have more time and energy to devote to new experiences. In the past year I have taken a Case Manager position at a local non-profit, next-step program for women who have completed drug and alcohol recovery programs and I am currently running for a seat on the Arcata City Council.
As a business owner of 20 years I have strived to run my studio with integrity, transparency, passion, professionalism and a sense of humor! I believe in working hard to do my best no matter what the task and I can almost always find a way to enjoy myself while doing it.
On a personal level, I have always had a heart for the disadvantaged, especially children and I have served the community in many ways both publicly and privately to do what I can for those who need the extra help. I also value good communication, fairness, cooperation and empathy which can be reflected in both my professional and personal endeavors. I have served our community in a wide range of activities; from President of the Arcata School District Board of Directors to local dance performances or helping underserved families and individual’s find and utilize local resources.
My style of leadership is to listen, learn and then lead. I believe in listening to all sides and working to find common ground. I will confront and deal with difficult issues the way I have strived to do with my own life and business; by using transparency, honesty, education, empathy and humility to come to positive solutions. If we want to move forward successfully as a community we need to focus on what we can do together. Together we can create a thriving and strong Arcata.
